How it works.
Mechanics
Water flows into the cartridge and down the rifled center of the ‘block’, a matrix of powder activated carbon fused together with a thermoplastic binder. As the water spirals downward and pressure builds, it is forced outwards through the matrix, leaving behind contaminants. Once the water passes all the way through, it fills the outer chamber and exits through the top.
Chemical Reduction
This process uses the oleophilic (oil attracting) properties of powder activated carbon (PAC) media to pull non-polar contaminants like organic compounds out of the water. The contaminants are ADsorbed (plated onto) across the massive microporous surface of each granule. The combined surface area of just one cartridge can easily exceed 500,000 square feet.
This process effectively reduces common disinfection byproducts, trihalomethanes (THMs), organic contaminants like chlorinated solvents, pesticides, and other industrial pollutants.
Catalytic Reduction
Chlorine is catalytically reduced from an oxidizer (NaOCl) to a harmless salt (NaCl) by stripping away the reactive oxygen.
